Voluntary Work in Chile

"There is a lot to Chile - arid deserts, snow-capped mountain ranges peppered with lakes, hills covered with lush forest and a myriad of islands in the far south."

Teaching Abroad in Chile

Juan Guerrero, our Director for Chile will meet you when you land at the airport in Punta Arenas. He will be easy to spot, brandishing a Teaching Abroad sign, and he will be waiting to pick you up and take you to your accommodation, as you will no doubt want to sleep off your journey. During your placement you'll stay with a local family who'll welcome you with a comfortable bed and some lovely food!

On your first day you will have an orientation trip around Punta Arenas. You will be shown the key sights of the city, as well as how to get around using public transport, where you can email and phone, and how to reach our Chile office.

All our teaching volunteers are based in Punta Arenas. Following your orientation, Juan will introduce you to the Head teacher of the school where you will be working, and to your supervisor in the English department. We will help you and your supervisor to arrange a timetable of work.

Juan sometimes has extra work that you can get involved in such as working with youth groups or sick children. If you are interested in getting involved, please discuss the options with our UK staff before you go, or our Chile staff once you are away.

Juan is contactable 24 hours a day by phone and lives in Punta Arenas if you have any questions or problems.

Conservation volunteers working at Omora spend a few days acclimatising in Punta Arenas, before transferring to Isla Navarino. During this time you will be shown the sights and introduced to the volunteers who are working in Punta Arenas. We will have purchased a flight for you from Punta Arenas to Puerto Williams (on Isla Navarino), and you will normally fly a couple of days after arrival in Chile. It's a small plane with great views, so ask for a window seat!

On arrival in Puerto Williams, your Project Supervisor will meet you. They will show you around and acquaint you with your new accommodation as well as your work schedule.

We will have reserved a return journey for you back to Punta Arenas. If you would like to change the date of this flight, please let our staff know as soon as possible - at least two weeks notice.
