From its extensive coastline, to its colourful deserts, to its beautiful glaciers, to the stunning Andean mountains, Argentina has been blessed by nature in almost every way possible. Although it has maintained its South American traditions, there is a strong European influence present in Argentinean culture.

Our Care and Community placements are in the area of Cochabamba, where volunteers work in a number of day care centres and orphanages, some with special needs children. Volunteers work with all ages from children as young as 2 to adults of 35. On average they work 8 hours per day from Monday to Friday.

At the heart of Indochina, Cambodia is bordered by Thailand to the West, Laos to the North and Vietnam to the East. After three decades of civil war, Cambodia can now happily say that it is a land of peace and beauty and can boast a rich culture of traditions which pre-date those of Thailand. With empty beaches and islands, national parks, and the breathtaking ruins of Angkor, Cambodia is a truly wonderful country to visit.

Home to Africa's friendliest and most welcoming people, Ghana is an intensely colourful land of dense forests, wild savannah and great beaches. Formerly called the "Gold Coast," Ghana is famous for its gold mines, rich fabrics and ancient social traditions. Mixed with a British colonial legacy and other more recent Western influences, Ghana has Africa's most open and exciting modern culture.

Projects Abroad send volunteers to a number of orphanages in the areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Here they work with children between the ages of 2 and 18. On a typical day, the volunteer arrives at the orphanage as early as 6am to help the children wash, dress, eat and generally get ready for school.

Our care placements in Mexico are either in Guadalajara or Ciudad Guzman. Volunteers work in orphanages, schools for the blind, a Down's Syndrome Centre or a home for AIDS patients. Not only do volunteers provide much-needed support for the permanent staff but they also contribute to the well-being and all-round development of the children by washing, feeding and dressing them, and simply being with them.

We work with a number of orphanages in and around Chisinau. Volunteers are able to help the local staff who have too much to do. There are opportunities to work with a range of age groups. You can help out with young babies keeping them occupied and entertained. With older children you are required to play games, help with homework or even teach them some English.

Volunteers are placed in one of twenty orphanages in Ulaanbaatar. Here they work alongside dedicated staff to provide practical help as well as the friendship and support the children need - and which the local staff don't have time to give. The children range from young babies to school age, and there can be as many as two hundred in one orphanage, or as few as fifteen.

Our programmes based around Kathmandu aim to help disadvantaged young people. Volunteers can work to try to give street children a fresh start in life with a basic education, though sometimes the concentration is on the more immediate need for decent food. Other projects with children include helping in a home for victims of domestic violence and working in health centres for malnutrition, mental disabilities and hearing problems.

Projects Abroad work with small orphanages in and around Brasov where volunteers work with all ages from babies to 16 year-olds. Despite international awareness of the plight of Romanian orphans, there remain large numbers of neglected children throughout the country who need daily attention. All of the orphanages are keen to have volunteers with new ideas and energy to help the permanent staff.

In Thailand volunteers work in a wide variety of care placements. The aim of all the placements is for the volunteer to interact with the children as much as possible, giving them a level of care and attention that will have a positive impact on their lives. They also work with people with physical or mental disabilities such as in AIDS hospices and schools for the handicapped.

The Olive Ridley Turtle lays its eggs on the sandy beaches of the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Unfortunately it has rapidly become an endangered species over the past twenty years. Based in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, alongside the famous Madre de Dios river, The Taricaya Centre is our own lodge and your home for the duration of your stay. Conservation in Peru is a project for the more adventurous. Access to the lodge is an hour river-boat journey from the town of Puerto Maldonado. You will be living with up to thirty other volunteers and a resident spider monkey!

The Trans-Frontier Conservation Project in Southern Africa is a government-run initiative designed to conserve areas of great biodiversity. A protocol was signed between the governments of South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland on 22 June 2000 to open their borders to allow for the conservation of trans-boundary ecosystems. Together these three countries work to conserve local wildlife, mountain ecosystems and African cultures.

Those who are looking to study medicine at university will find that by shadowing doctors and watching medical procedures they will learn a great amount on a placement and gain experience that would simply not be possible in their home country. The project is also open to elective students and depending on their level of experience it may be possible to assist on a practical level.

The doctors and nurses with whom the volunteers work really enjoy the cultural exchange that is brought by the volunteers and are more than happy for you to be involved in most aspects of their work in the hospital. This placement should be used as a wonderful opportunity to question doctors who are very willing to share their expertise and knowledge.

The large, well-equipped hospitals in both Shanghai and Wujiang welcome our volunteers onto medical programmes regardless of whether you are studying or already qualified. We will arrange your placement so that you can spend time on a variety of the hospital wards and learn from the expertise of the different Heads of Department. Alternatively, if you want to concentrate on one or two areas of medicine such as paediatrics, surgery or any other specific area just let us know.

You will see some conditions no longer common in economically more developed countries. All the hospitals in which we work are well equipped by local standards and provide an excellent backdrop for learning and improving your medical skills.

Our medical programme in India gives you the chance to work in leprosy clinics, maternity hospitals, dentistry facilities, kidney care centres and busy general hospitals throughout Tamil Nadu. We have structured the placements so that you will rotate around a number of clinics during your time with us, but if you want to specialise just let us know.

Projects Abroad is based in the most Mexican city in the world, Guadalajara. Mexico's second city has few foreign tourists so you will be a novelty wherever you go. The city hospitals of Guadalajara offer volunteers the chance to accumulate a wealth of experience in various hospital departments including Paediatrics, Obstetrics, Pathology and Surgery.

You will be working in busy central hospitals or specialised clinics in Ulaanbaatar, depending on your preferences. Placements are mostly in government hospitals with Russian-trained doctors, although we can also arrange for you to spend some time in private clinics and with practitioners of traditional medicine. You don't need to be qualified - each placement will be structured to match your ability and knowledge.

The views and scenery in Nepal are breathtaking. Look up and you will see Mount Everest and Annapurna alongside jungles which teem with exotic wildlife. The country is equally rich in terms of heritage, it being the birthplace of Lord Buddha and a majestic Hindu kingdom. Amazingly, followers of each faith peacefully share the stunning temples.

Our medical placements are suited to volunteers both with and without experience. Whether you are pre-university or a qualified medical student we can tailor placements to your level pf experience. We work with large private and government-run hospitals mainly in towns south of Colombo. Both offer the chance to shadow and assist local doctors and see a variety of conditions, treatments and operations.

Voluntary teaching is beneficial to everyone involved. Firstly, it provides our volunteers with the opportunity to work in an environment culturally different from their own. This provides volunteers with an experience that is unique to Argentina and they will return home with a far greater understanding of the way in which millions of the world's population think and act.

The Universidad Mayor de San Simón is one of Bolivia's 10 public universities and offers higher education to over 43,000 students who come from Peru, Brazil, Chile and other South American countries. The opportunity to assist professors allows volunteers to learn all about the higher education system in Bolivia, as well as interact with professionals in many different areas: Grammar, Linguistics, Translation, Literature, Sociology, Philosophy of Education and Language and many more.

Despite the visible improvements that are taking place, Cambodia is still suffering from a regime which considered education to be evil. During Pol Pot's regime of the late twentieth century, many qualified teachers perished. The situation has since improved, but any help in the area of education is greatly needed and appreciated. |

Our teaching programme in China is mostly based in Wu Jiang, a famous water town two hours east of Shanghai. Volunteers live with local families where they gain a privileged insight into modern Chinese life. Volunteers are placed in local schools where they always receive an exceptionally warm welcome. Teaching volunteers have an important and inspirational role to play in China by helping students not only improve their English but also to learn about other people and cultures.

As well as being a haven of peace after 50 years without an army, Costa Rica can also lay claim to being a leader in the field of ecotourism. The growth of tourism in the country has lead to an increased demand for English speakers. And it was on this context that Projects Abroad decided to start sending volunteers to Costa Rica to transfer their knowledge of the English language to those who would benefit greatly from it.

English is an official language of Ghana, but most children first learn an Africa language like Twi, Ewe and Ga so their English is weaker. Volunteers are placed mainly in schools in the Akuapem Hills, around 1 hour north of Accra the capital, where they teach conversational English to children between the ages of 5 and 14.

With their geographical location in mind, many Mexicans want to learn or improve their English as it is a gateway to many jobs especially with companies who trade with the US. Schools and Universities are seriously short of English teachers and this is where our volunteers are of real value.

The number of children wanting and needing to get a good education has grown quickly over the last few years. Learning English is key to getting a good job after finishing formal education. English is the global language of the world and all children in Mongolia now study English as a second language through to the end of secondary school. |

Teaching Nepalese children is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. They are spirited and charming and eager to learn. The role of the volunteer is to improve their spoken English skills. Volunteers often find songs and games popular and useful in maintaining the children's attention and in encouraging them to speak or sing in English.

We are working closely with the Peruvian Education Ministry on a 5-year scheme to update the English curriculum for the Andean region. Twenty three schools in and around the Sacred Valley between Cusco and Machu Picchu were selected to join the pilot programme. Until 4 years ago, the schools in Peru's Sacred Valley did not offer English on their curriculum.

After assisting the teacher for a few lessons, the volunteer will be able if they want to take the class alone, although the teacher will always be available to assist if necessary. Volunteers should follow the Romanian curriculum, but they are also welcome to bring their own ideas to the classroom.

The first Projects Abroad Summer Programme was organised in 2005. There are at least three months of summer holiday in Senegal, leaving many children at a loose end. The Projects Abroad programme provides a fun, educational and safe environment for youngsters and adults of all ages, and is open to anyone who wants to attend.

Volunteers are needed to teach English, which is especially important for a student's future education and job prospects. The programme welcomes not just English teaching, but also teaching sport, music, art, other life skills and sometimes even cookery; so please let us know if you'd like to use your extra interests on this project.

Sri Lankan school days run from 8am-2pm, and are broken down into 8 separate 40 minute periods, with a twenty minute break for "lunch" at around 11am. Volunteers with Projects Abroad are expected to teach 18 hours per week, so most volunteers teach around 4 periods per day, and spend their afternoons preparing for the next day's lessons and sometimes attending a local orphanage or tsunami relief camp to teach yet more English in the afternoon!

The Projects Abroad office in Thailand will provide you with a booklet of ideas for lesson plans when you arrive. Ideally, your input from your experiences will help this stock of lesson plans grow. Most of the teaching you will be doing will be conversational so interactive activities are essential.
