Journalism Placements in South Africa with Projects Abroad

The South African media is one of the most progressive and best developed of any African country, despite the difficulties it faces by having such a broad demographic – 11 national languages! English is the most popular form of media, with many black Africans preferring not to watch or read news in Afrikaans.

Student media is one area that you may work in; here you’ll be heavily involved in reporting the issues and opinions of one of the most rapidly advancing, politically active and internationally aware sections of South African society.

You’ll be placed within a fast-paced media company that uses a multi-media platform aimed at this student market, encompassing television, print and web media that was designed to educate, inspire, entertain and empower the youth of South Africa. Depending on your interests, you could find yourself interviewing students about their opinions on human rights for an article, attending concept meetings with a new client, or travelling up to Durban with a film crew to cover a sports event!

You should always be prepared to work independently but never be afraid to ask questions; your colleagues will be busy people but experience has told us that they are always willing to help a budding new journalist! We recommend that you write as much as possible during your placement as you never know how many of your articles will be published. Taking the initiative will pay off; and the stronger your desire to get involved, the more you’ll be allowed to do.

On a Projects Abroad Journalism placement in South Africa you will gain an insight into the workings of the media in a new cultural and political setting whilst also building up an impressive portfolio of work. Our voluntary journalism internships in South Africa will give you some fantastic work experience which will greatly enhance your job prospects in this competitive industry.

Volunteers have constant support whilst on their placement from an English-speaking supervisor. Of course, the Projects Abroad staff are always on-hand to provide you with necessary support too.
