Medical projects in Mongolia are based in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, where you will be working in busy central hospitals or specialised clinics dealing with paediatrics, maternity or perhaps trauma patients. The doctors are keen for you to achieve as much as possible during your placement, by working in a number of different departments. Medical practice in Mongolia is typically 'Western' (actually Russian); however there are also a number of private complementary medicine clinics where you can also spend some time, to help broaden your medical experience.
Hospitals in Mongolia also welcome volunteer nurses, whether you are fully qualified or looking to gain initial experience, so long as you can help with the general care of patients.
The supervisors on our medical placements in Mongolia have a lot of time for enthusiastic volunteers, as one of the doctors we work with recently explained:
"The medical volunteers are able to pose any questions about areas that they would like to explore further and I'm always delighted to spend the necessary time providing the relevant information to expand their practical and theoretical knowledge. I still maintain good contacts with many former volunteers, who repeatedly stress their desire to become qualified and proficient doctors, partly based on their experience here in Mongolia. I hope that this continues and that any future volunteers feel that they can gain some experience whilst working in our hospitals together with our qualified doctors in a way that will be beneficial to them regardless of their area of expertise."
