With placements based mainly in the rustic Akuapem Hills, but also available in Accra, Cape Coast and sometimes in remote rural areas, teaching in Ghana is a varied affair.
English is the national language of Ghana, but Ghanaian children grow up mainly exposed to their local tribal languages, such as Ga, Twi and Ewe. However, to communicate with fellow Ghanaians in education, business, and all official areas of life they must have a good command of English.
Most of our placements are in Primary Schools in and around the Akuapem Hills area. You'll generally be asked to take the timetabled English classes for a range of ages. Your encouragement, your praise and some good-fun lessons are often all that is needed to spark an interest in the language and a desire to try harder. Friendly Ghanaian teachers act as supervisors and ensure that you feel happy with your classes - and as most adults have a very good command of the language you'll rarely feel any language barrier.
Remote rural placements and also accommodation with very basic amenities are available on request - we are keen for you to experience family based life in smaller communities and help at small schools that would otherwise miss out on your help.
We also work with several primary and junior secondary schools which rely almost completely on our volunteers for English-teaching. These schools allow you to teach a range of subjects to younger children including English, literacy, basic maths and lots of games and singing!
In fact, French, geography, music, sport (particularly football), drama, art, and other extra-curricular subjects are always welcome additions to any Ghanaian school day in most placements. Just tell us what you're good at and we'll place you accordingly.
