Our teaching placements are based in and around Kathmandu in basic but welcoming schools. The main resources you will have in your classroom are a blackboard and a piece of chalk. In Nepal it is certainly true that your most important resource is yourself.
Most volunteers work with students aged 7-12 years-old. They will have some English but there is lots of room for improvement. You may be living with the family of the principal or staying next to the school, so you will be an important and integrated part of the school community. Although your main role will be to teach English you may find yourself coaching the football team or setting up an art club at lunchtime.
The confidence a group of students gains from speaking to an English speaker will really help out in a school where the local teachers are great at teaching the grammar and theory side of English but may not have such good conversational English skills. You will find yourself a welcome addition to the school team.
There are often opportunities to teach older students if you want. You may find that your skills in another subject area would be welcomed by the Nepali staff. Just let us know where your skills lie.
